1.) If you have a dog, get training: Kennels can train dogs on how to deal with a baby.

2.) Put food and water away from the baby: Make sure the food and water for your pets are someplace impossible for your infant to reach.

3.) Keep your baby away from pet doors: These doors are intended for cats and dogs to get in and out of the house easily. Put up a little fence next to the door—or close it off entirely.

4.) Ease your pet into this new relationship: Slowly introduce pet and child, 15 or 30 minutes at a time, until a level of mutual comfort is established.

5.) Train your child to be nice to the pet: Gently remind your infant that pulling and poking—a pet or anything—is unacceptable.
