Christopher Columbus, of course, was Italian, but there are plenty of other opportunities to learn about Italian culture – from the library, where children can read about the bevy of other Italian explorers, such as Marco Polo, to the dinner table, where families can feast on Italian food and learn about the cultural importance of the entire family getting together over dinner.

Explain the historical meaning of the fall and how it was the harvest season for farmers centuries ago as well as why there is progressively less sunlight during the season. Children will also be fascinated to find out and participate in the traditions behind both the Halloween and Thanksgiving holidays.

But educate them as to why they get that day off by helping them read and learn about Christopher Columbus. There are plenty of books about Columbus and children will find it fascinating to learn about his exploration and colonization efforts as well as how he disproved the centuries-old notion that the world was flat.

Turn it into a family activity by giving the kids some construction paper, magic markers and scissors and asking them to draw ghosts. Put the ghosts up on the window and voila! An almost instant decoration!

It happens to every mother: At some point, her children are too cool to be seen with her. But those phases come and go, along with those “cool” kids, and the mother’s faith in her children remains. Fortunately, the older a child gets, the more he or she appreciates Mom and, by adulthood, realizes that his or her best friend was there all along.

“The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.” -Henry Ward Beecher

Someone who goes to college will spend 16 years in a classroom, but nothing he or she learns will be as important as what this person takes from how Mom acts during his or her formative years. A kind-hearted mother will teach her children how to treat people the right way, and how to offer forgiveness when someone slights them. While higher education gets more expensive by the year, a mother’s lessons are both free and priceless.
